HOW TO APPRAISE GUSTAV STICKLEY FURNITURE - THE VERY BEST OF ARTS AND CRAFTS

GUSTAV STICKLEY SPINDLED ROCKING CHAIR

FORT PIERCE, Florida - In addition to being a furniture designer, Gustav Stickley was the most well-known name of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. In 1898 he founded The Gustav Stickley Furniture Company in New York. Stickley's furniture was a departure from the Victorian designs of the day. Sturdy vs. decorative, the value of his works continues to climb. An appraiser would do well to assemble his or her own catalog of completed sales and auction results in order to stay current on market trends. The wood and leather spindled high-back rocking chair shown above has a value of $2,000.00. The St. Lucie Appraisal Company maintains an extensive database of sales records and auction results that allows us to make accurate valuations of  furniture and other items designed and manufactured by Gustav Stickley.

GUSTAV STICKLEY DESKS

The five-drawer writing desks shown above are good examples of Gustav Stickley's designs, specifically #s 709 and 710 that feature kneehole compartment shelves underneath, copper hardware, veneer and mission oak construction with pegged joints and flush-tenon support beams. Depending on condition these desks currently sell in the $1,500.00-$3,000.00 range.

GUSTAVE STICKLEY DRESSER WITH MIRROR

This Gustav Stickley dresser has two half-drawers over two full drawers, a peaked mirror supported by a frame with a butterfly joint. Collectors can expect to pay up to $4,000.000 for a relatively good example showing only minor chips in the veneer.

Turn of the century antiques are in high demand and none is more collectible than the antique furniture designed and manufactured by Gustav Stickley.

AN APPRAISAL OF EDWARD WORMLEY FURNITURE - THE DEFINITION OF TIMELESS ART IN ANTIQUES

APPRAISING EDWARD WORMLEY DESIGNED FURNITURE

FORT PIERCE, Florida - Despite the sluggish economy of the last decade, there are items that have continued to grow in value. The unique and well-crafted furniture designed by Edward Wormley fits neatly into this category. In the world of antique furniture, Wormley designs continue to be sought after by designers and collectors alike. Mid-century pieces range from art deco to classic with an emphasis on originality - a hallmark of the line. Wormley's designs - primarily for Dunbar, are thought of as cutting-edge yet tasteful. Wormley's sofas appeared to float by means of a recessed base. Sideboards with tapered base legs, rare to find in good original condition, can fetch $10,000 at auction. To appraise these items for insurance, estate dissolution or a charitable donation is a treat as they are art as well as functional pieces of furniture.

Since the depression, Wormley incorporated classic Scandinavian motifs into his furniture designs. Later he began introducing more modernistic shapes into his work. Items such as teak and tile inlaid tables, parquet and woven cane dressers, elongated hexagonal and trapezoidal coffee tables and cantilevered side tables were things that set his work apart from other furniture designers. His lounge chairs were deep and low forms that combined beauty with comfort. Desks with inlaid leather surfaces were exclusive to the Dunbar line. There is no more comfortable chair than a Wormley-designed club chair or loveseat with down-filled back cushions.
