APPRAISING ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE GOLF CLUBS - ONE APPRAISER'S STORY

APPRAISING ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE GOLF CLUBS
FORT PIERCE, Florida - The news of the appraisal company that placed the value on an antique and vintage golf club collection in a well-publicized matrimonial matter brought The St. Lucie Appraisal Company to the attention of a law firm specializing in trusts and estates. Developing a good reputation as a personal property appraiser, both for obtaining tax and estate work is beneficial. We also act on behalf of buyers and sellers, in matters of charitable donations, trusts, bankruptcy and divorce. In South Florida, while doing a tangible personal property appraisal for the attorney representing an estate, golf clubs came into play, but not antique or vintage ones.

It is sometimes with sadness that a personal property appraiser takes an inventory of people's possessions. Depending on circumstances, objects may be left in varying states of repose. Prescription bottles on the kitchen table waiting to be opened, half-scribbled notes of things to do on the fridge, every indication that a daily routine was taking place right up until they passed. A residence in a high-end golf community is liable to contain valuable golf memorabilia. Of particular interest at this residence was a limited edition print of a watercolor showing a crowded practice green at Mission Hills Country Club, signed by the artist, Dinah Shore.

In the garage was their Club Car golf cart. In the trays on both sides were golf gloves, tees and all of the necessary items they would need for their next round of golf. And, of course, off to the side there were golf clubs, three sets in bags to be exact. There were some old Ping woods and an early Big Bertha driver in there. Something was missing but what?

Later, that afternoon it dawned on me, there were no bags on the golf cart! Most personal property appraisers would assume the that the bags in the closet were their playing sets but I knew better. While Ping Eye2s and Dunlop blades might have been all the rage years ago, there is no way this upscale couple had still been swinging those sticks. A quick telephone call confirmed my suspicion. The golf pro informed me that there were two brand-new sets of clubs belonging to them in the bag storage room.

So I went back to the country club to inspect and photograph the two sets of clubs. The pro told me how much the two of them, who died just months apart, loved to play the back nine in the afternoon. Both had been taking lessons and had purchased these clubs from him just last year. His stories were a  nice conclusion to this day spent learning about a couple through the things they owned and the routines they followed.

But the best lesson that day was learned by my clients who discovered they had hired a very thorough appraiser. Because golf and golf equipment - not just antique and vintage - are things I'm familiar with, the estate's value grew by two new sets of golf clubs.

DISNEYANA - FLORIDA'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE COLLECTIBLES MARKET - DISNEY IS EVERYWHERE!!

APPRAISERS OF DISNEYANA IN FLORIDA

FORT PIERCE, Florida - Whether you are buying, selling or collecting Disneyana, once Mickey Mouse and the rest of the Magic Kingdom become part of your life, expect many surprises. Disney collectibles and memorabilia abound not only in Florida but they have literally traveled to the ends of the earth. Here is an extremely sought after Lionel Walt Disney Circus Complete Train Set from the 1930's. Walt Disney had visions far beyond train sets, of course, but even his most trivial products are now  worth more than their weight in gold. Not only is the Disney name on this product, Lionel Trains, who manufactured and shares the billing on the box, is a powerhouse collectible itself.

This colorful complete set comes with a red wind-up engine that has some minor paint loss on the front.  This set also includes Mickey the Stoker engine, three circus cars, and all cardboard consisting of the Sunoco station, gas pumps, Mickey and Minnie running down the lane, Mickey Mouse tent, 11 tickets, circus truck, and Mickey Composition Figure. The cardboard pieces are in Excellent Condition, many never assembled are mint! Mickey the barker, of course, has light paint loss and wear.

If the set includes the original box with insert in excellent condition it becomes a valuable example. It is very difficult to find a complete set like this one.

The value of this item, based on sales of comparable Disney toys, should be around $10,000 but in better economic times this train set would bring significantly more.

The St Lucie Appraisal Company can place a proper valuation on Disneyana for insurance, estates, buying, selling, bankruptcy, divorce and charitable donations. Besides Mickey Mouse, that's another good thing about living in Florida.
