APPRAISING PETER MAX ART - HOW MUCH, EXACTLY, IS HISTORIC VALUE WORTH?

APPRAISING PETER MAX ART

FORT PIERCE, Florida - Every now and then I get an extra- interesting object or collection to appraise. Here is a simple blue Levi Strauss denim jacket circa-1980 that was customized by Jim Karas' grandmother. In the mid-eighties, Jim was a budding artist in New York City. He became friendly with Peter Max who admired the denim jacket so much he asked if he could embellish upon it. Grandmother's adornments included a pop-art needlepoint of Jim surrounded by flowers, leather fringe at the hem, fringed leather pockets and leather back panel. It is on this panel that Peter Max illustrated a scene depicting Jesus Christ, Uncle Sam and a beautiful woman. There are clouds, there are stars, there is sun and it is signed "MAX 1985." In addition to this exquisite panorama, Max continued in acrylic, creating red and blue accents to the body and sleeves of the jacket. Very consistent with his style of art at the time. Below the needlepoint, Max continued the theme of grandmother's piece by drawing Jim's neck, shoulder and chest. Even though this was a mid-eighties composition, Max adorned the left shoulder with the numerals "2000" and the iconic Woodstock dove on guitar drawing. There seem to be roads that tell us Max's intentions were to show that there is a path from the peaceful 60s to the year 2000 and beyond.

Last, but certainly not least, in 1986, Max again saw Jim’s jacket and asked if he could add more art to it. The inside of the jacket shows a marvelous group of illustrations that includes a scene depicting Mt. Fuji and a mimicry of the needlepoint work that appears on the outside of the garment. Between the two drawings Peter signed it "MAX 1986."

DAMAGED BY FLOOD WATERS

It is highly unusual to come upon a three-dimensional work by Peter Max. We have seen his sculptures and his drawings on batting helmets and other objects but the vast majority of his art has been done on flat panels. Yet my inquiry about this piece to every major art dealer in the United States specializing in works by Peter Max drew a collective Y-A-W-N. Each of the gallery owners also slept through the part where Peter Max actually revisited this canvas one year later, added a completely new drawing to available space, and signed and dated it anew. Has Peter ever done that either before or since?

PETER MAX ART

As for Jim's denim jacket, Peter's drawings on it aren't the vivid scenes that the artist is known for. There is always less of a market for underdeveloped art, of course, so as an appraiser, I'll need to consider the historic value in determining its worth.

Unfortunately, this unique jacket was damaged in a flood that occurred after a deluge of rain hit South Florida. A restoration of the fabric could compromise or obliterate some of the art.

Historic art.

DONATING ART, ANTIQUES, CARS AND COLLECTIBLES TO CHARITY - OBTAINING IRS TAX CREDITS IN FLORIDA

FLORIDA - It's no secret that we're an older population here in Florida. While some of us have had to embrace austerity lately, many others are still in a position to offer assistance to those less fortunate. That's good news for non-profits. Charity is one way to make a positive difference. But a donation to a charitable organization need not be in cash. Many people don't realize that they can obtain valuable IRS tax credits while doing a good deed by contributing items like art, antiques, furniture, collectibles and other personal property. Motor vehicles such as cars, trucks, boats and RVs are also among the gifts that are acceptable donations. In order for an endowment valued at $5,000 or more to qualify, it is necessary to obtain an appraisal from a licensed professional which will accompany the item. The appraiser will also complete and sign the IRS Form 8283. The St Lucie Appraisal Company is one such firm providing appraisal services in Florida. You are welcome to call us if you plan to give valuable items to a worthy cause. Always consult with your tax advisor prior to making any decisions regarding donations.
