APPRAISING SPORTS COLLECTIBLES, ART AND MEMORABILIA - FROM BASEBALL TO NASCAR TO GOLF

1993 Derek Jeter Rookie Buyback Card
APPRAISING SPORTS COLLECTIBLES, ART AND MEMORABILIA IN FLORIDA

FORT PIERCE, Florida - In recent years, appraisals of all types of collectibles have shown a significant drop in fair market value. Sports memorabilia has been caught in that downward trend even though record prices are being paid for high-end autographed jerseys, vintage baseball cards, game-used items and many other types of art and souvenirs. The world of automobile racing, NASCAR in particular, provides a demand for collectors with vintage, retro and mid-century nostalgia still bringing high prices. An appraiser doing an evaluation of a golf memorabilia collection will find that custom golf bags that once belonged to professionals from the 40s and 50s sell for thousands of dollars.

The baseball card shown above was recently sold for $2,000.00 which represents an appreciating market for this particular item. The rarity of sports collectibles obviously adds a great deal to both their cachet and value. This one isn't vintage by any means but it's hard-to find and is a representation of one of baseball's most iconic figures. Among Derek Jeter's most sought after rookie cards is his 1993 SP Authentic Foil card. Upper Deck took this already popular card and took it to the next level by inserting 93 autographed copies of the card into boxes of 2009 SP Authentic Baseball. Upper Deck had each one signed personally by Derek Jeter and hand numbered to Ninety-Three. When the first copies hit eBay, bidding for it was fierce but now it will cost Jeter aficionados even more.
Back in the heyday of sports, professionals had no idea that their old baseball jerseys or racing helmets would be worth anything. Most of those things were given away to friends or simply disposed of. Those treasures are now lost to posterity. In collecting, rarity most often translates into higher value. Tomorrow, when the flood of collectibles and memorabilia of the current crop of in-the-know sports superstars hits the market, the market as a whole will become saturated and weak. By then, however, that 1993 Derek Jeter card will be selling for about five grand.
