Since the Internal Revenue Service changed its rules prohibiting the appraisal of donated items by “Excluded Individuals” our company has seen an increase in the number of requests to appraise musical instruments.   1. The IRS will disallow any tax-credit if the item donated was appraised by anyone having a financial interest. That would include a music store selling an instrument on consignment, the original seller of the instrument, a relative, etc.
